Florence

A new day — a new city, a new country. This time it’s Florence, Italy.

As part of our 7 Night Western Mediterranean Cruise on Wonder Of The Seas, we arrived in the city of Spezia, Liguria region.

From there, we took a bus to Florence.

Once again, I’ll repeat the obvious (as I’ve mentioned about the places visited during this cruise: Marseille, Rome, Naples): Florence is a beautiful city!

Excursion in Florence
It’s a pleasure to wander through it, especially with a guide whose English, adorned with an Italian accent, added charm to the walk.

Golden Gates of Florence

Golden Gates of Florence
The famous local attraction covered in gold. These are the “Gates of Paradise” in the Baptistery. This masterpiece was created over 27 years.

Using the term “local attraction” in the context of Florence’s historic center feels redundant because ALMOST EVERYTHING HERE, EVERY INCH IS A LANDMARK.

Palazzo Vecchio

It’s hard to imagine how SUCH buildings were constructed in the 13th century.

Palazzo Vecchio
Wiki: Palazzo Vecchio (Italian: Palazzo Vecchio, Old Palace) — a building in Florence, on Piazza della Signoria, built between 1299 and 1314 by Arnolfo di Cambio.

The building’s height, including the Arnolfo tower, is 94 meters. That’s practically three 9-story buildings. Wow! And this was the 13th century!

By the way, can you guess what function the top of this tower served?

For a long time, it served as a prison.

Florence is magnificent, a must-visit.
